CAPC PARASITE MAP
This map is the result of a yearlong effort to gather and combine data from two major national laboratories and format it in a county by county illustration of the prevalence of selected parasites and vector transmitted diseases. Special acknowledgement and appreciation goes to IDEXX Laboratories and VCA Antech Laboratories for so generously sharing their data and giving of their time to help us bring the map to life.
INSTRUCTIONS:
The map includes data for 2008 1nd 2009 for both cats and dogs.
Open the map and select a parasite. Roll your pointer over the US to see data for various states.
The data is presented in both absolute numbers and % positive results.
You can then click on an individual state to reveal counties.
Select a parasite. Roll your pointer over counties to see data for various counties.
The data is again presented in both absolute numbers and % positive results.
If a county has no positive results recorded it will read as NDA (No Data Available)
To change parasite selected you must click bar RETURN TO MAP OF US and repeat for the next parasite.
INTERPRETATION
The results reported are for specimens reported by the commercial labs only. At this time we do not have access to other commercial laboratories nor do we have access to tests performed “in house.” These animals are almost definitely owned animals and are, by virtue of the fact that they are visiting a veterinarian and paying for these tests, generally well cared for pets.
In other words the % of positive tests among well cared for pets may well represent the best case scenario in a given county.
The data compiled is from two major commercial laboratories.
The data compiled reflects fecals or blood samples from owned dogs and cats. Age and sex are not known.
Click on a parasite. Click on a state and then roll over the various counties.
Prevalence is demonstrated for each state by choosing the desired parasite and rolling over the state.
The national prevalence box reports
Clicking on any state reveals all counties in the state.
To change parasite you are interested in you must return to the map of the US and again choose the parasite and roll over the county you are interested in.
The State prevalence box reports
Counties that are shaded in gray will report No Data Available (NDA) which means no specimens were submitted for that county.
